Some clinicians refer to "speech
rate" as including the number of
words or
syllables produced in a given time period (e.g., a speech rate of 170
words per minute or 210
syllables per minute). This measure encompasses time
spent pausing and stuttering, as well the time spent in actually producing
syllables. In order to assess "articulation
rate," some clinicians assess the number of syllables spoken only during fluently produced utterances.*
