The abnormal actions, behaviors and positions exhibited by a stutterer in
trying to escape speech difficulty. These include movements such as eye
blinks, arm swinging, grimaces, head and body jerks, finger snapping, clearing
the throat, and hand tapping, etc. These refer to the movements which a
stutterer characteristically and abnormally uses when approaching and escaping
from a feared word and when
struggling to
release himself from the moment
of stuttering. (See accessory behaviors.)*
