Section 4.01 of the ALI's Model Penal Code provided this test for the insanity defense:
"A person is not responsible for his criminal conduct if at the
time of such conduct as a result of mental disease or defect he lacks substantial capacity
to appreciate the criminality of his conduct [cognitive arm]
or to conform his conduct to the requirements of law [volitional
arm]."
