forensic psychiatry
This subspecialty of psychiatry involves psychiatric opinion provided to a third party for purposes other than clinical consultation or treatment. This usually refers to legal settings, either civil or criminal, wherein the psychiatrist provides an opinion to assist the court. More broadly defined this may refer to almost any independent psychiatric examination.
