Light is sometimes prescribed for treatment of seasonal
affective disorder (seasonal depression,
winter depression) or for sleep cycle problems (e.g. Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorder). The patient may
spend several hours every day sitting close to a bank of intense lights or wear small
lights mounted on a visor or glasses. One form of phototherapy involves use of
lights that gradually intensify in the morning creating an "artificial dawn".
