drug: venlafaxine

U.S. Preparations:
Preparations Outside U.S.:
- Dobupal, EFectin, Efexir, Efexor®,
Trevilor, Trewilor, Vandral
Stephen Stahl's Clinical Pearls* (Consult your physician before making any change in
your treatment.)
- Three drugs in one:
- SSRI at low doses (essentially
a twice a day SSRI)
- Add NE uptake blockade at medium doses.
- Add DA reuptake at high to very high
doses.
- Choose the dose, and therefore choose which drug you want.
- No advantage over SSRI at low doses.
- Possibly more rapid in onset of action than other antidepressants.
- Possibly useful at medium to very high doses for cases refractory to SSRIs.
- Not well tolerated at medium to high doses.
- Zolpidem or trazodone may be
useful for venlafaxine's insomnia.
- Mirtazapine (Remeron) may be useful for
venlafaxine's
nausea, insomnia and agitation.
- Venlafaxine withdrawal effects common (GI,
dizziness, sweating, etc);
- Controlled release formulation in testing for once a day use; until then use twice daily
dosing.
- Low likelihood of drug interactions
(other than MAOIs).
