For various practical and theoretical reasons, the concept of information [Latin informare, to form, to shape] needs to be more clearly defined than is usually the case in everyday speech. Information is not synonymous with "meaning." The amount of information does not specify the content value, truthfulness, or purposes of the information. The amount of information in a statement is a measure of how much the statement reduces the number of possible outcomes, that is, how much it increases negentropy.*
