kindling model

This model for perpetuation of a mental disorder holds that an extrinsic factor such as a psychosocial stress produces early episodes of an illness but eventually episodes occur without an extrinsic stimulus. This model is suggested by animal research in which electrical stimulation of the brain insufficient to produce an epileptic seizure, when repeated may eventually result in an animal that seizes even in the absence of electrical stimulus.
