prolonged speech program

As a step toward fluency some clinicians ask the stutterer to go through a series of steps wherein they purposefully prolong sounds and syllables for a predetermined duration of time. Gradually, the extent of the prolongations is reduced until the point where the prolongation is essentially negligible. (See continuous phonation; stretched sylables.)
