punishment

The term punishment in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) literally means to "reduce behavior".  An example of a punishment procedure could include having a person brush their teeth after each cigarette they smoked.  If brushing their teeth after each cigarette led to the person smoking less and less cigarettes, this "tooth-burhsing procedure" would be considered a "punishment procedure".
