In the late 1700's author Rudolph Erich Raspe (see below) wrote tales loosely based on the life of this German cavalry officer. In the tales he repeatedly sought treatment for fabricated physical illnesses. Richard Asher in 1951 is credited with first applying this name to a syndrome classified in DSM-IV as factitious disorder with physical symptoms.
