Remove Bupe Prescribing Limits

02/08/2018

DEA has moved in the right direction, though not far enough, in expanding access to buprenorphine maintenance for opioid addiction by raising limits and allowing midlevels to prescribe the drug which is safer than alcohol and probably less addictive than tobacco.

In my opinion DEA has failed to justify continued restriction by imposing any limit on the number of patients "treated" and by continued requirement of special training and certification.

DEA should allow pharmacies to dispense buprenorphine and buprenorphine-naloxone over-the-counter to adults. Failing this, DEA should remove limits and allow prescribing without special training and DEA numbers if the agency really wants to save lives.
