Coding for Skype Encounters
Now that some payers claim to reimburse for patient encounters via videoconference I wonder how to code them on insurance claims. The old “place of service” code cannot quite account for separate locations of physician and patient. The “GT modifier” seems appropriate, but apparently implies that the mode of transmission satisfies security criteria like encryption. It may also imply that the patient location satisfies stringent eligibility criteria.
Somehow I doubt that the patient’s car sitting in a Starbucks parking lot makes the grade.
Have you (patient or provider) succeeded in obtaining reimbursement for a patient encounter conducted via Skype, Facetime or Google Hangout? If so, how did you code it?
