directive counseling

Broadly explained, this is a process of listening to and discussing with the stutterer his problems so that he can see his own misconceptions. The clinician asks questions and suggests answers as to how the stutterer should alter his attitudes, feelings and behaviors to make his perceptions and activities more realistic; may or may not be psychotherapeutically oriented.
