false memory syndrome

Perhaps not a true syndrome in the medical sense, this term refers to a phenomenon in which an individual "recovers" previously "repressed" memories of exposure to trauma or abuse that never actually took place, often with suggestion by a psychotherapist that such events must have transpired.
