According to this theory repeated exposure to drugs of abuse leads to increasing sensitivity of the brain to their attractiveness or desirability which can persist even in the absence of continued exposure to the drug, or with continued exposure, in the absence of pleasure from use of the drug, thus explaining relapse after long abstinence.
