Kratom & DEA
In this announcement DEA claims an association between kratom and 15 “deaths between 2014 and 2016” proves that the substance dangerous enough to justify classification in Controlled Substances Schedule I. Compare this to hundreds of thousands of deaths every year caused by nicotine and alcohol. DEA clearly lacks “the wisdom to know the difference.”
This action will create a black market, probably leading to more use by vulnerable young people, and even more deaths. In fact, I wonder whether the announcement itself encourages thousands previously unaware of the drug to buy it and try it.
Instead, the government should regulate production and marketing of the substance, require warnings, and allow sale to adults over the counter.
Better yet, we should scrap the controlled substance schedule altogether and eliminate moralism and racism from drug classification.
