The smallest meaningful unit of language. Examples of a free morpheme that can stand alone would be: book, run and happy. Examples of bound morphemes, (prefixes and suffixes) could be the suffix "ing" in "running" and the prefix "un" in "unhappy." The sentence "That's an unsafe place for boys to be playing" contains nine words and thirteen morphemes.
