Television producer Max, referring to anchorman Howard, says, "... His wife died... he became morose and isolated and began to drink heavily." (0:00)

Howard, on television: "I'm gonna kill myself."
"blow my brains out right on the air..."
Max proposes a "suicide of the week" program.
"suicides..." (0:02)

Howard on television: "Since this show was the only thing I had going for me in my life I have decided to kill myself. I'm going to blow my brains out..."
Woman staff member: "Howard just said he was going to blow his brains out..."
"Howard just said he was going to kill himself..."
Man: "What do you mean Howard just said he was going to kill himself...?"
Man: "He said... I'm gonna shoot myself." (0:06)

Unidentified television reporter: "... announced that he was going to kill himself."
Max tells the others, referring to Howard, about a "... statement that he's been under great personal stress..." (0:08)

Producer Diana tells her staff, referring to the American people, "They are turned off, shot up... want somebody to articulate their rage for them." (0:15)

Howard: "Yesterday I announced on this program that I was going to commit public suicide... admittedly... madness." (0:18)

Executive Frank asks Diana, "Are you suggesting that we put that lunatic back on the air...?" (0:25)

Diana tells Max, "This one operates on parapsychology... trance-like episodes." (0:34)

Diana tells Max, "I had six years of analysis and pretended to be sane... and I had an affair with my analyst."
"a terrified young woman with a father complex." (0:39)

Howard describes a hallucinated voice on television. (0:42)

Max tells Howard, "I think you're having a breakdown."
Howard: "This isn't a psychotic episode... not a breakdown." He swoons. (0:45)

Max: "He could be jumping off a roof for all I know. The man is insane... He needs... treatment."
"It's just possible that he isn't insane." (0:49)

Frank tells Max, "You get your psychiatrists. I'll get mine." (0:52)

Howard tells the audience, "We deal in illusions..."

Howard, on television, exhorts his audience to "... go to the window and yell, 'I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this any more!'" (0:55)
"You're beginning to believe the illusions... you maniacs... We are the illusions." He swoons. (1:06)

Max tells his wife Louise, "I know I'm obsessed with her."
Louise: "You keep telling me that you're obsessed..." (1:16)

Max tells Louise, "She does have one script in which I kill myself." (1:19)

Howard swoons at the end of the show. (1:28)

Jensen tells Howard, "They tell me you're a madman."
Howard: "He's mad as a hatter." (1:32)

Jensen tells Arthur, "all anxieties tranquilized." (1:37)

Max: "I was however also a very depressing?" (1:40)

Max tells Diana, "I went to visit my wife today because she's in the state of depression. So depressed that..." (1:42)

Max: "Hysteria swept through the network." (1:44)

Max tells Diana, "I figure a year before you crack up or jumped out your... window." (1:49)

Max tells Diana, "Your madness Diana... madness." (1:51)
