Hotel manager Stuart tells writer Jack, referring to former caretaker Charles, “... at some point during the Winter he must’ve suffered some kind of complete mental breakdown. He ran amok, and, eh, he killed his family with an axe... then he put both barrels of a shotgun in his mouth. What the old timers used to call cabin fever, a kind of claustrophobic reaction which can occur when people are shut in together over long periods of time.”
Jack, referring to his wife Wendy: ”She’s a confirmed ghost story and horror film addict.” (0:08)

The doctor tells Wendy, referring to her son Danny’s episode, “They’re more akin to autohypnosis, a kind of self-induced trance.”
Wendy, referring to Jack: ”... he wasn’t exactly in the greatest mood that night... he said, ‘Wendy, I’m never gonna touch another drop...’ and he hasn’t had any alcohol in five months.” (0:15)
