(tardive dyskinesia)
A medication-induced movement disorder, this symptom associated with neuroleptic drugs used in the treatment of mental disorders is characterized by progressive involuntary movements, usually beginning in the voluntary muscles of the head. They may progress to involve the limbs and trunk. The movements may be described as choreiform, athetoid, or rhythmic. They may last indefinitely, but may appear to resolve with increased dose of the neuroleptic.
