April 20, 1745 - October 25, 1826

This French psychiatrist pioneered humane or moral treatment of mental disorders, dramatized by his unchaining of the inmates of the Bicêtre in Paris. He also devised an early classification of mental disorders as melancholia, mania, dementia, and idiotism.
