plane of consciousness

In the psychology of D. H. Lawrence, the human psyche exists on at least two (or as many as seven) planes: 

"Consciousness develops on successive planes. On each plane there is the dual polarity, positive and negative, of the sympathetic and voluntary nerve centres."
