prolongation
As related to stuttering, the involuntary lengthening or prolonging of vocalized speech sounds (rrrrunning, aaaaple), or nonvocalized sounds (sssseven, ffffourteen). Sometimes refers to prolongation of an articulatory position, as when the person stops completely and holds his mouth in a position to say "p,pause.icture." Prolongations are frequently accompanied by increases in loudness and/or pitch.
As related to therapy, the easy voluntary prolongation of sounds and syllables on feared and non-feared words is used quite extensively to modify the stuttering pattern. (See modifying the stuttering pattern; disrhythmic phonation).
