Originated by Sigmund Freud as a clinical method of treating personality disturbances, especially the psychoneuroses; as a method of investigating personality development and problems of personal and social maladjustment; and as a theory of normal and disturbed personality development. The theory distinguishes the conscious from the unconscious or subconscious mental life and stresses the role of sexual development and adjustment in relation to personality development; the clinical method emphasized free association and dream analysis and, in general, the recovering and reevaluating of repressed and forgotten significant experiences and feelings.
