reverse free association

The psychotherapist's mind wanders freely in order to recall items from a patient’s social history or genogram that come to mind in response to what the patient is doing or saying during a session, often revealing connections among seemingly unrelated phenomena for the first time. (These are not free associations to the psychotherapist’s own history).
