schismogenesis

Schismogenesis [Greek schisma, division; genesis, origin, generation] is a category system introduced into the field of cultural anthropology (ethnology) by Gregory Bateson in 1935 and 1936 to describe the "process of differentiation in the norms of individual behaviour resulting from cumulative interaction between individuals" (1936, p. 175).
