The dysfunctional family role of a patient with borderline personality disorder who systematically ruins or devalues any attempt by a parental figure to “help” take care of them. Created in response to parents who feel a solemn duty to take care of children but who covertly hate the role or feel that it prevents them from accomplishing other valued goals, it keeps the parents involved while at the same time providing them with a ready excuse for their anger or abusive behavior.
