stress

This term may have been borrowed from engineering and physics where stress refers, for example, to a force applied to an object such as a spring resulting in deformation or "strain". When applied to human emotions or psychology this term acknowledges that events, conditions, and circumstances (forces) of life can result in symptoms or impairment of functioning (strain). This term is also sometimes used as a synonym for anxiety.
