reinforcement

In behavior therapy this is the process by which any stimulus (reinforcer) that immediately follows a response increases the probability of that response occurring again.
  • positive reinforcement: addition of a positive stimulus following behavior, i.e., a reward
  • negative reinforcement: termination of an aversive stimulus following behavior, e.g., cessation of yelling
