If the
LD50 is divided by the
ED50 the resulting ratio provides a measure of the margin of safety in clinical use of a
drug. The higher the
therapeutic index, the safer the drug. A
therapeutic index close to one (1.0) implies that the
dose required for desired effect may be lethal as well.
