Will Seattle Do a First Step?
According to news reports Seattle has convened a task force to consider establishing a location where addicts can openly inject heroin, with clean needles and ready availability of treatment for overdose, without fear of arrest.
Enabling or not, I strongly support this acknowledgement by local government that, like Step One of the Twelve Steps of Alanon says, we cannot control the behavior of addicts. This acceptance of reality could go a long way toward saving lives. Close proximity of effective treatments like methadone and buprenorphine could allow, even encourage, addicts to choose treatment when ready.
Even if this plan does not address the problem of heroin contaminated with other dangerous substances and unpredictable potency, let’s stop pretending and start helping people.
Go for it, Seattle!
