The partial or complete loss of the receptive and/or expressive use of language as a result of damage to the central nervous system. Persons suffering from expressive aphasia (e.g., nonfluent aphasia) frequently have problems maintaining speech fluency, but this is considered a fluency disorder which is different from stuttering. These patients frequently experience word finding and word retrieval problems and often compensate for this difficulty with word substitutions and circumlocutions.
