dissociation (EMDR glossary)
As distinct from a Dissociative Disorder, Dissociation is the process of emotional distancing commonly experienced in traumatic circumstances, and often reexperienced by clients during an abreaction of the trauma as numbness or confusion. When the client does not suffer from a dissociative disorder and is not dissociating to get away from an excessive level of disturbance in the treatment milieu, dissociation is treated in EMDR as another layer of emotion and targeted for continued reprocessing.
