In order for a family to function smoothly, family members must know what to expect from one another and must have orderly and predictable rules. When a member breaks a rule, the rest of the family may gang up on the individual to invalidate the change. Summed up in the message “You’re wrong; change back.” this process often prevents adaptation to new environmental contingencies.
