perseveration (stuttering glossary)

The seemingly involuntary and automatic continuation of a mental or motor process such that it persists for longer than would be expected, after the situation which elicits it ceases to be present. As related to stuttering, the continued repetition of an act of stuttering associated with the stutterer's failure to shift readily from one mental set preceding his difficulty.
