respiration

The act of breathing which, in a complete cycle, involves the inhalation (inspiration) of air into the lungs and the exhalation (expiration) of air from the lungs. Some stutterers, in an attempt to release a moment of stuttering, exhale nearly all of their tidal air and make the remainder of the speech attempt on the remaining complemental (residual) air.
